COVINGTON, LA – Alzheimer’s disease is a national health crisis. At a cost of $236 billion a year, Alzheimer’s is considered to be the most expensive disease in the nation. What’s more, it is the only leading cause of death in the United States that cannot be prevented, cured, or even slowed. In Louisiana alone, over 84,000 people aged 65 and older have Alzheimer’s Disease, and over 231,000 caregivers are providing unpaid care to their loved ones at a rate of 263,000,000 hours per year.
In response to the local need reflected in these staggering statistics, the Alzheimer’s Association Louisiana Chapter and Schonberg Care communities Beau Provence & Park Provence have teamed up last Saturday, April 22nd to host Mimosas for Memories, an inaugural event held at Meribo in Covington to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association before the upcoming big annual Northshore Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Mimosas for Memories was the first philanthropic event of its kind to take place on the Northshore, and it was considered a rousing success, raising a total of $12,000 in funds through a combination of ticket sales, auction items, specialty artisan champagne flutes, and sponsorship dollars.
“We are so glad we were able to join forces with Beau Provence to get the ball rolling on a fun annual event here on the Northshore benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association,” says Audrey Baker, the Director of Marketing & Business Development at Park Provence Senior Living. “The wonderful response and turnout that we got at the first Mimosas for Memories event is a true testament to how deeply affected so families are by Alzheimer’s/dementia, and it gives them a unique opportunity to give back and join in the fight against Alzheimer’s- all while enjoying delicious beverages and delightful company.” If you’d like to join in the fight against Alzheimer’s, visit www.act.alz.org to donate or learn more about taking part in your local Walk to End Alzheimer’s event.
